D-10 Holders, Your Visa Is Watching What You Do

hero

A D-10 visa is basically Korea saying, "Okay, we'll give you time. Show us you're using it."

The problem is most people are so overwhelmed with job-seeking (D-10-1) and taking OASIS modules (D-10-2), they forgot to document their hard work!

Time flies quickly when you are deciphering Korean hiring posts, or, getting your business plan ready for your startup. Suddenly, you find the familiar letter of visa renewal notice in your letterbox.

How to renew your D-10 visa?

On top of required documents, you must submit documented proof that you have been utilizing your time well, for the purpose of your visa status.

  • D-10-1 Job Seeking visa, you should have been applying to job openings, with email proof / application screenshots / even rejection emails work. If you have been doing an Internship, have a copy of your contract ready.
  • D-10-2 Startup Preparation visa, you should been attending OASIS modules, applying to startup challenges and incubator programs, doing market research, etc. All documented with proof.

Your renewal is a progress report. Nobody reads a progress report that says "trust me." Support it with evidence, documents, certifications.

5 Common Mistakes D-10 visa holders make:

Working without permission.

Part-time job, paid internship, freelance gig. Without 체류자격외활동허가, it's a violation. This is the single most common reason D-10 renewals go wrong.

[1] D-10-1 holders: No evidence of job seeking.

Applications, interview emails, career fair attendance. Keep screenshots. Keep everything.

[2] D-10-2 holders: No progress on OASIS modules.

If your OASIS points and startup prep progress look identical to your last application, that's a hard story to sell.

[3] Letting your bank balance slide.

Your financial proof matters at renewal too, not only at application. Bank balance requirements differs based on your nationality. Call Immigration Hotline 1345 to know the latest requirement for your renewal.

[4] Only looking at your visa expiry date.

And forgetting that you need at least 6 months left on your passport too for the visa renewal.

[5] Outstanding payments

  • Residency Tax
  • National Health Insurance
  • Minor fines (such as for not sorting your trash, parking fine, etc)

You may have neglected outstanding payments. The individual institutions may not be hot on your heels for the payment, but once Immigration tries to renew your visa, these will be flagged by the system. Your renewal process maybe affected.

Hidden pitfalls of D-10-1 renewal

Story time...

Aisha was on D-10-1.

Rent was expensive, so she took weekend shifts at a friend's café. Cash, just a few hours, on a mutual understanding.

She also did some freelance translation for a Korean cosmetics company, paid by bank transfer. She knew internships had to be reported to immigration within 15 days. But this was a freelance contract, not an internship, so she figured the rule didn't apply.

She was half right. It wasn't an internship. Which meant it needed something stricter: permission from immigration before she started. Same for the café shifts.

She was also genuinely job hunting. Thirty applications, four interviews. But she never saved any record of it.

At renewal, the work came to light. Her job search? She had nothing to show for it except her word.

The café shifts and freelance work were meant to buy her time in Korea. Instead, they cost her time, energy and peace of mind, and left her facing penalties for working without permission.

She wasn't lazy or dishonest. She was just trying to survive, but not aware of the rules. That's the part that stings.

This is a fictional case created to illustrate the points above. Rules change, so always confirm current requirements with HiKorea or the 1345 Immigration Contact Center.
