Scaling Up in Korea for Foreign Founders

Scaling Up in Korea for Foreign Founders

Korea's government spends serious money getting foreign startups in front of companies like Samsung and Hyundai. Most foreign founders never hear about it.

Most of this support comes from the Ministry of SMEs and Startups (MSS) and its agencies, such as KISED. The money is real, the corporate partners are real, and the application windows are short. Below are three programs built for foreign founders, what they offer, and who can apply. New to startup jargon? Start with the glossary.

Glossary

  • PoC (Proof of Concept): A small real-world trial that shows a product works for a specific customer before a bigger deal is signed.
  • Conglomerate / chaebol: A huge family-linked business group in Korea, like Samsung, Hyundai, LG or SK.
  • Equity-free funding: Money that doesn't require giving up any ownership of your company.
  • Commercialization funding: Government money that helps turn a product into something people can buy. It can cover development, marketing and IP.
  • Localization: Adapting a product to fit a new country's language, laws and habits.
  • Cohort: The group of startups selected together for the same round of a program.

K-Startup Grand Challenge (KSGC)

This is Korea's flagship program for international startups. It is funded by MSS, managed by KISED, and operated by the Gyeonggi Center for Creative Economy & Innovation (GCCEI) [1]. Selected startups get structured PoC opportunities with more than 20 major Korean conglomerates [2].

The 2026 edition gave ₩380 million in prize money to the top 20 teams and ₩250 million in scale-up grants to the top 8 [3]. Total equity-free support can reach ₩950 million [2]. The 2026 cohort runs from July 2026 to April 2027 [1].

Global Startup Commercialization Support

This MSS program is for foreign founders building a business in Korea. Winners receive ₩50 million on average and up to ₩80 million [4]. The money can go toward product upgrades, localization, IP protection and marketing. Winners also get access to linked programs from the Global Startup Center (GSC) [4].

In 2026, the program grew from 10 supported companies to 15 [4].

K-Scouter

K-Scouter is a government-backed MSS and KISED program that helps promising global startups enter the Korean market [5]. It is run by several appointed "scouters," and each one runs its own version.

For example, The Innovators runs a 5-month hybrid program for 8 startups. It includes business matching with customers, PoC partners and investors [6].

We get it. You came to Korea to build a startup, not to become an expert in Korean paperwork. The business alone is a steep learning curve. But running a company here also means keeping up with admin and legal requirements, and falling behind can cost you opportunities like the ones above.

That's where VizaBridge Corp comes in. We help foreign founders stay on top of the admin side, and we connect you with partner law firms when you need legal advice. You focus on the business. We'll help with the rest.
